Yak Shack

Your trip to the Everglades will not be complete without a visit to the YAK SHACK. It has become a local "must see", not just for kayakers, but for everyone interested in ecologically sustainable, low impact lifestyle choices that make a difference in our Everglades, present and future.

My dear old YAK SHACK is the humble recycling of a globe traveling Cargo Container. It was delivered to the City Seafood Market and Cafe Dock here in Everglades City from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, FL after years of service transporting tons of amazingly diverse goods to ports of call around the world. Oh, if these sturdy walls could talk; what might we learn of the people and places this big old metal box has seen and been? And now, because it wasn't relegated to the scrape yard, but repurposed as an ecologically sustainable, virtually hurricane proof "building", the spirit of adventurous kayakers like you and I will leave our mark on the history within these walls.

It is my hope that you will consider the YAK SHACK a touchstone in your efforts to RECYCLE, RE-PURPOSE, REUSE.
